Frequently Asked Questions

How does work?
It's easy. People with surplus food post it. We alert anyone in the area that has expressed an interest in receiving food donations. If one of them are interested in claiming it they can log in and do so.

Why should I use
By joining the site you become a part of a growing network of individuals and organizations committed to reducing food waste. We're answering the question "What should I do with all of this surplus food?" by taking the work out of searching for a recycler in your area interested in picking it up. We're answering the question "Is there one central location where I can find currently available food donations?" by providing just such a place.

I already have an existing relationship with a food bank. Can I still use
Yes. Our goal is to strengthen and facilitate those relationships you already have. Anytime you are creating a food donation on you have the option of alerting a single recycler instead of everyone in the area. Only that recycler will see and be able to claim that donation. If you don't see the recycler you're looking for on the site please contact them and ask them to join.

Can I donate my food scraps on
In addition to donations meant for human consumption you do have the opportunity to donate scraps or other compostable materials. These donations do not carry a monetary value though.

I'm afraid of getting sued if I make a donation that gets someone sick. Am I protected against that sort of thing?
Signed into law on October 1, 1996, The Federal Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (full text here) provides protections in order to encourage the donation of food and grocery products to nonprofit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. As long as the food donated on this site is done so in good faith the supplier is protected from both civil and criminal liability.

What other benefits does joining get me?
By using for all of your donations you will have one central location where you can see a record of your activity along with the value of those donations. Need to see how many pounds of food you donated in Q3 of last year and how much that allows you to deduct at tax time? Want to know how many pounds of food your largest donor has donated this year so far?

Does it cost anything to join
It costs absolutely nothing. The site is free to join and free to use.
